Uninterrupted sleep
One of the biggest contributors to a new mom feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and unhappy is the lack of restful sleep. When you don’t sleep a minimum of four hours straight, it is impossible to feel good the next day. Having an overnight doula from MothersCare can help provide a night or more of interrupted sleep that can go a long way to feeling like your pre-baby self again!
Emotional support
Prior to your going to bed for the night, your doula can answer questions you have about your baby, like whether they are sleeping or feeding properly or any other concerns. Your doula can help you to determine if your baby is normal or if you should have your doctor check the baby. Sometimes, reassurance that everything is normal with your baby can be very helpful. The doula can also be a good listener for a mom who just needs to express some challenges she is finding with herself, such as lacking confidence or feeling blue. The doula can help you to determine if some of the physical and emotional things you are experiencing are normal or not, as well as help you to decide if you should ask your doctor about them.
Sleep is Healing
When you sleep your body repairs itself. Your body has been through alot, with either a vaginal birth or a c-section. There are a lot of bodily tissues that need to heal. Sleep allows your body to heal faster. A few nights of sleep will help you to feel like your old self sooner.
Spousal support
The pressure on the spouse when a newborn comes into the home is often overlooked. Today’s fathers are often very “hands-on” and stay up with the mom or take a shift or two during the night to help his wife. That is a good thing. Some men do this while still going to work during the day. This can take its toll on the father too. Getting a good night of sleep, even if it’s just for a night or two a week, can really help to relieve stress on the postpartum couple.
